Saturday you to be

Mhm. For Saturday, as I said before, one word: youtube. www.youtube.com. I won't go further revealing...yet. First: a red-line cocktail is made of Sambuca, Jose Cuervo Tequila and something called Creme de Cassis (1 teaspoon of it) which is a blood-red, sweet, blackcurrant flavored liqueur.
Served in a Shot Glass, excellent for this Saturday night.

Now, what is the meaning of all this? How in the world can these two things have something in common??! What these two things they have in common is Obo Cafe. Saturday, for a shot cocktail of red line, you will be the most powerful man/woman in the bar, for several minutes. Because for every red-line cocktail shot, shot of cocktail, you will choose the music, you want, one song or why not a video or something you like...from the YouTube.

We thought: Hey, let's make a YouTube night. We'll have an image projector, we have the internet, let's have fun with the YouTube like we have fun at home, only that this time you won't spend your time on YouTube at home, but /of course/ at Obo.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

Ladies and lads. Are you bored? No sun is shining? We will give you that summer feeling this week, as in every week. The game night, or The Game Night, is huuuuuuuuge fun. I mean, games like "don't let the monkey fall out of the tree", Cluedo, Uno, Risc Commander, Jenga Tower, Saboteur, Cash'n'Guns and many, many more. You don't have all night to try all out. So, we gather again tomorrow (Wednesday) and we shall play. Seriously, not so seriously, depending on the game, but at least you will all do something creative and FUN.

Wednesday : Game Night.

Rendez-vous Thursday. Vygo meets Byby & Eddy. Minimalistic house muzak, good times. What else could I possibly say more about Thursday's at Obo than you all know. Maybe you even know more than we do. If you don't know how it is or what is it about, ask a friend, or ask a friend to ask a friend. One of these two possibilities will give you some info and some feedback. And I bet ya it's gonna be a good one.

For Saturday...we shall tease you a little bit. One word: youtube. ?!

Away...

Sorry for the lack of updates. I've been tied down with work. And as some of you may have read, a cab driver took off with my brand new laptop.

So I'm basically living off my work laptop and mobile internet. But I can't blog properly during office hours and I don't relish the thought of bringing my laptop home.

It's a nasty piece of bulky matter, even though mine was a brand new issuance and supposedly a business use model.

I'll try to find time this coming weekend to get a personal laptop.

Till then.....Au Revoir..

The Miracle of Life

God was at work again this week with one of his many miracles. This lovely child, Haven, was born on Friday to two wonderful people; my son, Adam and my daughter in law, Amber. She weighed 6 lbs, 12.6 oz and was 19 1/2 inches in length; a picture of perfection. She arrived 9 days early, much to our delight, after 13 hours of steady labor.

I thought that the experience of having my own children had to be the greatest moment in my life. I found out that the arrival of my 1st grandchild also fit into that category! I think I was more nervous this time around than when I was experiencing childbirth myself. I remembered, even though it has been almost 25 years since I delivered a baby, the process quite vividly. I kept getting these flashbacks of the painful contractions, the pushing, blowing out those non-existent candles when you weren't supposed to push, the exhausted feeling when you think you can't possibly push anymore, the excitement when the head and shoulders finally surfaced, and the unbelievable moment when you stare into that precious little face for the very first time.

The process seemed to be moving at a normal pace up until the pushing began and then Amber pushed for over two hours. She had insisted that she didn't want any pain medication during the delivery and she succeeded. I had told her that way back in the old days, when I had my babies, we weren't even given that option. Times have changed, but being a strong believer in all things natural, Amber wanted to deliver her baby the same way. There was a hint from her doctor that if the baby wasn't moving any further within the next 15 minutes, she would have to give her something to help her finish. That was all the incentive that Amber needed and she found the strength to give a few more successful pushes.

When we heard the music playing over the loudspeaker that indicated a new baby had been born, we went crazy! I couldn't control the happy tears that started and they surfaced once again when my son Adam came out to share the first pictures of his new little girl that had just been born on his birthday! I could see the pride on his face, both in what he had just experienced with his wife and in the greatest gift that they had just been given.

I've been to see Haven several times since then and she is coming home today! We have been dog-sitting for our granddog, Ella, who can't wait to see them and meet her "little sister"!! Adam brought over a baby blanket yesterday that smells like Haven for Ella to get used to so that the first meeting of the two goes well. I had a talk with Ella this morning and explained her important role in Haven't life as friend and protector. I think she got it because I proceeded to get a huge slobbery tongue lick afterwards.

I had a talk with Haven yesterday while holding her at the hospital. I introduced myself as she opened her eyes and listened to my voice, like she was really trying to understand who I was and what my role was in her life; she seems to be very smart already!! (I will try and not be as braggy in my future "Haven" posts, but I can't promise it - lol). I told her that I have alot of plans for the two of us in the future and how I plan on teaching her how to make all kinds of wonderful things like my grandmother had done with me. She seemed quite interested until her little belly reminded her that it was time to eat once again and I wasn't the one who was going to be able to fulfill that need!!

I can't wait for her to arrive at her new home and check out her beautiful bedroom! She is in for a wonderful life and Adam and Amber are in for a wonderful experience in theirs!

Here is a lovely little saying that I had seen once that says it all!

Before you were conceived, I wanted you.
Before you were born, I loved you.
Before you were here an hour, I would die for you.
This Is The Miracle Of Life!

Spotlight / Makeup: Kanebo Kate @ Watsons

OK, Im posting this via mobile mode. So no fancy pictures and stuff. Will add more details when Ive access to a nice computer.

This is so exciting. I just got a mailer from Cozycot announcing that Kate, Kanebos drugstore makeup line is now available in Singapore, at selected Watsons.

Some of the star products of Kate would be the Gel Eyeliners and the Diamond Cut eyeshadow palettes.

Im not sure which Watsons will carry the range but I have a feeling that the one at Ngee Ann City would probably carry the full line since its like the flagship store for their Japanese Drugstore Makeup lines.

Interview with There for Tomorrow: by Kellie Conboy

Florida’s own There for Tomorrow will be taking the stage at Jack Rabbits July 12 as part of the Rock Yourself to Sleep Tour. I chatted with front man Maika Maile during a day off about how their sound has evolved over the years, their involvement with the 2010 Take Action Tour, and how they’ve been keeping busy over the past two years with a new album, several major tours, and even a trip abroad to play for fans in Japan.

Before I jump into the questions, you should know that the first time I saw There for Tomorrow was about six years ago, my freshman year of college, at Wackadoo’s at the University of North Florida. Even then I was really blown away by you guys, you were so young to be playing so well and so professionally. And then a few years later you put out your first EP and it was a totally different sound, and I was even more blown away by that. Was that change in sound an intentional thing, or was it kind of an artistic evolution, or a combination?

Yeah, since we kind of hold our music pretty close to our hearts it just grows as we grow, because all it is is an extension of us at the end of the day. Of course, as time comes and as we go through different things … Now we’re traveling the world, I can’t imagine what our music is going to sound like in a couple years. But it’s not like we ever try to neglect the past, or anything, and move on to something new, we use the past to move on to something new. I can’t even really remember what we sounded like before Pages, it was a lot more, like, metallic, more metal influence. We just started to adopt a huge love for good pop songwriting, so maybe that influenced a lot of what we did from then on out. But it’s always going to be a changing thing.

For people who aren’t familiar with There for Tomorrow, how would you describe your sound?

I don’t know, that’s always a tough question for me. We’re influenced by a lot of things, but at the end of the day, in layman’s terms, we’re just a melodic rock band. We’re really inspired by melodies, that’s really what drives our music, but we’re still rock-rooted because all of us grew up, mainly, rooted in rock-playing and rock music culture and everything. But we really do listen to everything, so it’s kind of eclectic for just being a rock band, so it’s hard to exactly title it. That’s the thing, a simple question like that, which could be answered in two words, gets thrown out in a couple paragraphs, that’s how much we don’t know what we are.

How was the process of writing and recording your very first album, Point of Origin, different from writing and recording your subsequent releases?

Oh my gosh, we were, like, thirteen, that was us just having the time of our lives, just making music. Looking back on it I really can’t remember tracking or anything about the experience of the process of making a record. Everything was just so different and I was so young I can’t even remember. But, we went in there and did all our songs, we wrote all our songs, we always have, and did our thing, and we have that to always reflect on and brag about, like ‘look what we were doing when we were thirteen, while you were playing with Pokemon trading cards we were making full-length albums.’

There for Tomorrow recently wrapped up the 2010 Take Action Tour with Mayday Parade and A Rocket to the Moon. Tell me about the Take Action Tour’s mission and why it was important to you guys to be a part of it.

Take Action was great, we’ve always kind of looked up to it because of it being involved with things not just trapped into what happens in the music scene. It’s reaching out to the world, and it’s making an impact for situations that are tough for people. This year it was about bone marrow diseases and raising awareness for it. The National Bone Marrow Registry has a thing called the Be The Match Organization where it just tries to raise the most bone marrow donors as possible. We raised a bunch this year, I think by the second week [of the tour] there was like 200 or 300 newly registered donors, so it was really cool. The organization that was behind it all was started by a kid that had leukemia when he was fourteen, so it was amazing to be behind something that a fourteen-year-old is doing. That’s so positive, and it’s making such an impact, because he had leukemia and he obviously had his struggles with that, now he’s making a difference in the world, which is really cool. We just helped out by playing music.

You guys also recently returned from a tour in Japan. What is it like having fans in another country that don’t even speak English as a first language, and do they still sing along to the songs when they see you guys play?

I think nowadays English is the epicenter of communicating among the world, so they all know far more English than we know Japanese. That’s always respectable to go to other countries and meet people that are bilingual or sometimes trilingual, and sit there and translate with their friend who’s a fan who can’t talk to us because she can’t speak English. We meet really cool people all around the world, it kind of blows our minds that we were just playing Wackadoo’s a couple years ago for, like, thirteen people, and now we’re playing packed shows in a whole other continent.

Speaking of tours, There for Tomorrow has been busy over the last couple of years with the Secret Valentine Tour at the beginning of 2009, last summer you had Warped Tour and also released your album, then this year you had the Take Action Tour and the dates in Japan, now you’re on a tour with a little over 40 dates. Have you guys had a chance to kind of sit back and take everything in, and how do you deal with homesickness and keeping in touch with your family and friends?

You know, we’re just so eager and young and adamant about what we do, we love playing so much that a lot of the time it’s just blurred in our lives because of what’s happening. We basically save ourselves up for just the 30 minutes, 40, 50, an hour we get to play a day. Since we get so wrapped up in that, it’s hard to think about other things too much. But obviously we’re very close with our families, and we have real tight-knit groups of friends at home. At times you can obviously get a little homesick, but I think we’re all just so used to it by now, and our eyes are so set because we’ve seen such a return with it, with how amazing our fans have become, and are becoming, and some of the people we get to meet are really awesome. It always inspires us to meet people that are still actual, legitimate fans of music, so it makes us feel like we’re doing our job to return sincere music to the limelight again, instead of all of this candy land music.

Tell me about the Rock Yourself to Sleep Tour and how There for Tomorrow became involved in it.

Rock Yourself to Sleep is put on by Motel 6. They just contacted us about it, and our friends were going out as well, so we just decided to come out and visit all of our friends that we’ve built all over the country one time during the summer, and then we’re coming back all around the U.S. again in the fall. We just want to get out there and just really keep tying the knots with our fans, we gotta keep busy on the road.

Talking about your new album, A Little Faster, how does it feel to have an album that’s doing so well? You guys got the MTVU award … Was it surprising, or something you feel like you’ve been working towards?

It’s kind of hard to really classify what “doing well” is nowadays, but for us, and how young we are, and how much time we’ve been doing it, it’s been a huge honor to see what’s happening and how people are really paying attention to our music. Personally we don’t feel like we’ve connected with the world yet, at all, we don’t feel like we’ve made any sort of stamp yet of what There for Tomorrow is, what we mean, and what we will mean. It’s obviously just going to take time, just like everything has up until now. We’re young, we’re 21 years old, and able to travel and play, but it’s not like we’re real interested in making suitcases of money any time soon. We’re just trying to put in time and show some genuineness towards what music is nowadays.

Are the lyrics on A Little Faster about specific events, or situations, or people in your lives, or are they meant to be more general?

Especially on A Little Faster, they’re fairly personal accounts of things I’ve been through and things I see happening through my eyes. I’ve been through a lot, I’ve seen a lot happen, and have made it through a lot of things thanks to the love and support of my family. I’m able to kind of just share my personal experience being myself and striving to be a unique individual, so I think A Little Faster was kind of … just a way to vent, to just cope with being a person. So I try to open up as much as I can because I think it’s really important for people nowadays to understand how important communicating is; communicating your thoughts, what you think about things in your voice, just speaking up and not being ashamed is what we’re trying to encourage.

Just to go back to this whole “making it big” idea, in an industry where bands with little to no talent can become popular overnight just with marketing by the right people, how do you set yourselves apart from everyone else and get your music out to listeners?

You know, thanks to the internet and thanks to all these new ways to reach out and break language barriers, this and that, we can kind of enable ourselves to start to slowly become something global. Thanks to the support of our team behind us who help us push what we do, and they all really believe, we can get our stuff out there among the cesspool of candy land music, and baby music – cute music is what I like to call it. But everybody does their thing and my whole perspective on life is that there is no one better person than the other, there’s just good and bad intentions, and I think everybody can understand what good and bad intentions are. So when you have people singing about just taking shirts off, and partying with “my red cup” and this and that it doesn’t really hold any true weight to anybody, it’s just a fun time to get drunk to. Like I said, I want to be a part of the fight to restore sincere music to the top again.

Another thing that has changed in the music industry, also because of the internet, is how accessible artists are to their fans, and vice versa. But along with that comes easier access to the critics, too. I took a few minutes the other day just to look at some news entries about There for Tomorrow on AbsolutePunk.net and immediately found hundreds of people who had lots of good things to say, but there were also lots of people who had bad things to say. Do you guys ever read reviews and look at message boards, and is the negativity that comes from some people on the internet something that’s ever bothered you guys, or is it as normal to you as someone stopping you to take a photo with you?

Well, when we were young and kind of new to having ourselves out there it was a lot more effective, like, somebody attempting to bring us down, but now it’s just an understanding that some of those people are probably just sitting in their underwear with milk crust all over their lips in their parents’ basement on the computer that their parents bought them last year. So it’s not like that really has a huge effect and weighs heavy on what we do, but of course you have to have those people. You have to have the naysayers because there’s no protons without electrons, there’s obviously no good without bad, bad defines good, so the negativity defines us just wanting to prove through and come out with something positive instead.

Do you have any last words, anything to say to encourage people to come out to the show at Jack Rabbits?

I don’t know, I think the people that really want to be there will be there because they know where we’ve come from, we haven’t come from anything different than just what we’ve done. They’ve seen us play Jack Rabbits a lot of times, and Murray Hill Theatre, so we have a lot of family there, a lot of believers and followers so we’re excited to be in Florida once again.

      Musings: Foundation Epiphany...

Here I am, 3A.M local time. The TV is on, Spain Vs Holland, the half time whistle would be blown in another few mins.. We'll know who shall be crowned king of football in another hour. And end the spate between Paul the Octopus Vs Mani the Parakeet and 黃大仙, the chinese god on the predictions

Anyway, while my dad stared at the TV, I am peering over my laptop, trying to decided whether I should join an online spree to get the NARS foundation in Deauville from Sephora. Oh yes, I've no interest in football, that is.

Suddenly, I had an epiphany. Why would I want to get something new when I already have a HG foundation? My Diorskin Nude @ 020?

Frankly speaking, I don't know. It's not as if I'm looking for a cheaper alternative. NARS foundation don't come cheap either and all I had was some references from online beauty bloggers to base my color selection from. So why? I guess my inner foundation fetish is at work here. The unyielding quest to achieve better looking skin.

Anyway, I shall shelve my plans for new foundation. I still have 4 bottles to finish. Although I dont really like 3 of them. They make my face too yellowish looking. That includes the Lunasol Water Cream Foundation. They work on my skin, just that not as good as my Dior one.

I think I'm not suitable for Japanese foundations since I'm more of a neutral tone rather than yellow, which many Asians fall under. I tend to forget that my dad do have some caucasian blood in him since my features take after my ma, a pure chinese. But whenever I look at my sis, I'll be reminded of that bloodline. Yellow undertone foundations never did quite perform for us. Even my youngest sister is matched to MAC NW, albeit her dark complexion.

Now, you can truly enjoy a perfect and simple lifestyle, confidently...."

The good people over at Fr3b.com invited me to sample and review their client's, Hada Labo's best selling products the other day. Hada Labo has been a much raved product in Japan and I've been looking forward to it's launch in Singapore. Under the condition that I'll review based on my actual experiences, no matter good or bad, I decided to take up the challenge!!

The products I got were their supposedly best sellers, the Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Lotion and Face Wash. I've been using the products for the past 5 days and it's time to do a review on it.

The main selling point of the products is the Hyaluronic Acid ingredient. This ingredient is known for it's hydrating properties and used in many skincare products, such as the Laneige Perfect Renew Skin Refiner, which uses this ingredient as it's selling point too.

Product Name: Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Face Wash
      Size: 100g
      Price: Not Available
      Available At: Exclusively Watsons

      Product Description from Manufacturer:
      • Hydrates as it cleanses. Helps restore and perserve skin's natural moisture, leaving it silky smooth.
      • Gently cleanses leaving skin comfortably hydrated and refreshed.
      • Skin pH balanced. Low irritation.
      • Free of fragrances, mineral oil, alcohol and colorant.

      Packaging:
Minimal fuss-free squeeze white tube packaging. Very Hygienic.

      Texture:
Whitish cream texture when it's fresh out of the tube. Suds to a low foam white creaming texture after mixing with water.

      Price:
Not sure of the price but given that it's a drugstore product, I would expect it to be less than S$30.00. But at 100ml, I realized my Clinique Cleanser is actually cheaper based on per ml.

      Road Test:
Long-time friends would notice that I don't usually go for drugstore cleansers. Not that I'm a snob but I had some traumatic experiences with drugstore cleansers in my adolescent years that left a pretty deep mark on me.

So, this time round, I was really apprehensive in using this product. Not to mention that the texture of the foam kind of remind me of the same product that scarred me years ago. But well, I still went for it. For the adventurous spirit in me.

Not trying to be a nag here but ALWAYS mix your cleansers with water well between your palms first before putting them mixture on your face, unless of course, it's a cream cleanser meant for sensitive skins. Never ever put foaming cleansers directly on your face before mixing it up well.

Anyway, I was really surprised that it did it's job pretty well, cleanse without stripping all moisture from my skin. Come to think of it, it performed as well as my usual Clinique Cleansing Liquid.

But those who knows me will know, I don't usually have high expectations of a cleanser. All is ask is, cleanse without drying. I do not expect it to be some omnipotent product that will do wonders.

      Verdict:
Truth to be told, I'm pretty impressed given that it matched my HG. Would I continue to buy after I run out of my current sample, probably not. Why? Because I'm a person who loves fragrances despite her sensitive skin condition. Haha, yes! I find the product a little boring without the fragrances that I'm so used to. And the texture kept reminding me of the the scars I bore from my adolescent years, which would probably take forever to eradicate.

This is a fuss-free product that's friendly on the wallet. For those who are looking for something that's good for your skin and wallet, you might want to try it out. But do note that not everyone takes well with Hyaluronic Acid. For Singaporeans, you can click to Fr3b.com to have a sample sent to you.

      Other Product Pics:

      Fresh out from the tube:

      After mixing with water.

Next up is the second product....

Product Name: Super Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Face Lotion
      Size: 170ml
      Price: Not Available
      Available At: Exclusively Watsons

      Product Description from Manufacturer:
      • Instantly hydrates skin and helps preserve its optimum moisture balance.
      • Replenishes and locks-in moisture for complete hydration. Skin feels significantly soft and supple.
      • Helps improve dry and dehydrated skin, leaving it silky smooth.
      • Skin pH balanced. Low irritation.
      • Free of fragrances, mineral oil, alcohol and colorant.

      Packaging:
Minimal plastic bottle. Top cap has a hole for dispensing. Given the price, I don't expect a lot with the packaging. However, it would be good if it is a pump bottle as the texture is rather runny, pour bottle is a little messy.

      Texture:
I was expecting something that is more of a runny gel like texture. But I was surprise that it was actually very runny, very similar to the texture of normal toner.

      Price:
Not sure of the price but given that it's a drugstore product, I would expect it to be less than S$30.00.

      Road Test:
Given the product description, I was expecting a texture that is very similar to that of Laneige's Perfect Renew Skin Refiner. But I was quite surprised that the texture is more of normal toner. It was very spreadable and the feeling is very refreshing.

A few seconds later, I can feel this layer of moisture enveloping my whole face and dried very fast. There wasn't any sticky feeling that I was expecting. I also realize that I didn't need as much moisturizer as I used to need.

So far, I wouldn't say I've seen marked improvements but I do notice that my makeup applies better, especially around the sides of my nose, whereby there are gaping pores. And my makeup actually stays better throughout the day, probably because of the oil-free formula. But I cant be sure as I switched sunscreen this week to Dior, so the makeup might be a due to Dior's sunscreen.

      Verdict:
Actually, I'm quite won over by this product, except for the no fragrance. I wouldn't say it performed better than my HG but I would say it's on par. Of course, the price is very much more competitive than my HG.

Would I buy this product after the sample run out? Frankly speaking, I don't know. It's only been 7 days since I started using this product and although first impressions are good, it takes more than 7 days for me to commit to a product / brand.

I guess I would want to explore this product further but I wouldn't raise it to HG status just yet.
