Spotlight / Campaign: The Body Shop Stop Sex Trafficking of Children & Young People

The Body Shop was my favorite brand back in my secondary days. I liked the brand image. Profits With Principles. But ever since it was sold to loreal, that halo seems to have lost it's luster in my eyes.

However, I was passing by their branch @ Novena Square after gym today and saw the posters for their latest campaign. Being born with the privileges that many women in other parts of the world do not get to enjoy, I have a weakness when it comes to campaign for women and young children, the weaker group within the society. So I was immediately drawn when I saw the posters.

Do you know?

  • Human Trafficking is fastest growing criminal industry in the world. About 1.2 million children (Approx 50% of Singapore's population) are exploited in the global commercial sex trade though this figure is thought to be much higher due to the underground dealings of the traffickers.

  • Reports show that sexual exploitation is the most likely purpose of trafficking.

  • Trafficking exists in countries all over the world. It doesn't only exist in the poorest countries.

I had previously watched a television serial on Hallmark Channel about Human Trafficking in the US. The plot was the exact replica of the true-life account of Sasha, one of the victims mentioned on the Bodyshop website.

It's already heart wrenching to read about the trauma the victims had to go through, not to mention the horrors of actually living through it. The accounts are all the same. The hopes of a better life and in the end, all they got were dreams shattered and lives ruined. It's akin to modern slavery and we should not turn a blind eye to this.

Now, it's time to do your part as a human being, to bring about more awareness of this worldwide problem. So, what can you do?
So what are we waiting for? Start today and spread the word.
